Brandings and 5K

It seems that during the summer I have ample time to get absolutely nothing done. That apparently includes this blog.  These pictures are a little old.  The above one is from our branding.  The branding went really well this year.  Brad's brother Robby came up from Texas to lend a hand.  The branded around 250 head all before 11:30 am.  They did really well.  This whole calving season was a great one, we thank the weather and Mike Wilcoxson for that.

These pictures are from Jayla's 5K.  The above picture is of all the Girls on the Run girls and coaches.  I really like this program.  They focus on helping girls believe in themselves, have great self-esteem and learn healthy habits.  They also focus on girls not tearing each other down, instead building each other up which is a huge issue facing girls these days.  It was such an awesome experience to be part of the 5K with these pre-teen girls.  I took up a cheering section towards the back of the route and I loved listening to friends and family members cheer their girl on.  There was one dad that ran with his daughter, who was a little overweight.  He was so good with her, he kept encouraging her to keep going and that they could do it and in the end she did and was so happy.  All the girls were on cloud nine.  Jayla felt like she could do anything.  Her last lap she was so tired and when she got back to my area she slowed down and came over to me and said 'Mom, you remember how I said these new shoes were good?  Well they aren't, my feet really hurt'.  She then began to kind of cry.  I hugged her and told her that it wasn't the shoes, she was just really tired. I promised her that as soon as she crossed the finish line she would feel awesome.  She is still wearing the 8 bracelets she got for her 8 laps.

This is a picture of Jake and Natalie, his business partner.  They had a little business going of selling cross necklaces and bracelets.  Natalie would design the jewelry and Jake built the display stand and took your money.  Sure they should have been doing math, science or English but that is a whole other issue.

After the branding Brad, Robby and Mike had an "oyster" fry.  And for those of you unfamiliar with our type of oysters (pretty sure all of you know) they are the testicles of calves.  Robby spent a good amount of time skinning and cleaning all the little nasty things.  I do not enjoy them and do not eat them but Brad, Robby, Mike, Kendra, and Jake ate some.  Jayla tried one again, even though she has had them before, and spit it right back out.  Proves that just because it's deep fried it doesn't mean it's a chicken nugget.

Kendra was a big help to her dad during the branding.  By the end of the day she was exhausted, but it was totally worth it for her.  She loves days with her daddy.  She is becoming more and more a teenager.  Her and I fought the other morning because I found out that her brand new shoes that she had worn twice before losing one of them was not actually drug off by some animal as I was originally told but rather "somewhere in Rachel's room".  I was ticked that the shoes we had just bought her were not important enough for her to spend the time and effort to find.  My response...then you are going to pay for them.  I later had a little change of heart being as she could have just kept saying that it was drug off and I would never have been the wiser so for her honesty she only has to pay for half of them, but she is still paying for some.  She is also becoming obsessed with texting so that will soon be an issue I am sure :)

The picture below is of Jayla and Jared.  Jared was a young man that she met at honor band that she really liked, and he liked her too.  Jayla ended up forgetting her instrument and her music.  How a child can forget her INSTRUMENT when she goes to a band concert I have no idea.  Lucky for her the school that held the concert had an extra student trumpet so she was able to participate.  I called Brad and asked if he would kindly run into town and pick her instrument up from in front of the school.  She made it to town in my car with her trumpet, but then took it out of my car (which was the car that transported the instruments) and set it on the sidewalk. Anyway, when we got there and got her an instrument we had to ask the boy that she was sitting next to if she could use his music too, he said sure and the rest is history ;)
