I can remember as a kid going on car trips to my grandpa's house in Pueblo. We left early in the morning and drove straight through. We would stop if we had a need to but for the most part we just drove. Usually that is how we travel today. We leave and drive straight through with a goal in mind...get to Colorado as fast as we can. Well this trip was a little different; our destination was not Colorado so we slowed down a little. I am reminded of the movie cars, where Sally is talking to Lightning about how people used to travel for the experience of the traveling, they slowed down and just enjoyed where they went. Our trip to Mount Rushmore took most of the day and we stopped a couple of times just to see the sights. We stopped at a mom and pop rock museum, that though I can't say was really worth the $20 entry fee it took for us to look at an older gentleman's rock collection, it was fun to laugh at the pet cat that kept following us around. While looking around outside at the petrified wood collection this cat, that was laying right in front of the door when we stepped into the yard, would just run spastically to and fro, did I mention it was black? I was starting to wonder if we stepped into a pet cemetery thing. It was a memory that we wouldn't normally have. Down the road we stopped at Wall Drug, which for those of you that don't know is a "drug store" that takes up a an entire block in this town. It's claim to fame is that it offers FREE ice water and it has since 19--. It was interesting and fun.

When we finally made it to Mount Rushmore we discovered that it was pretty much what we were expecting, big stone heads. We were glad we went and it was educational but I don't know that any of us will feel that burning desire to go back, at least not until grandkids are in the picture...many, many years down the road :)

Our travels took us in a huge circle this trip. In fact I got a call from our credit card company because they just could believe that my card had traveled from Norfolk, NE to Rapid City, SD, to Cheyenne, WY, and Sydney, NE all within 4 days :) Brad had to pick up his father's day present, a .22 pistol, in Sydney so since we had to go that direction we got to meet Heather, Rob and Robert for an early Birthday for Kendra. It was nice seeing them again, even if we had just seen them a month earlier. I can never get enough sister time :)
The best part about doing a birthday in that part of the country is the fact that Kendra was able to get a CSU cake. She is a huge fan...mainly because her daddy was a fan.
