My name is Kendra Froman and I am thirteen years-old. I have lived on a ranch my whole life and am from a long line of farmers and ranchers. My great great grandparents started ranching in Colorado back in the early 1900’s and since then at least one member from each generation has continued with farming and ranching. With a little luck and a lot of hard work, I will be one of those members for my generation.
I could never imagine myself working behind a desk every day. I think not having the sun shine on you while you are working would be miserable. I love how at the end of the day I can be proud of what I accomplished. I don’t think many people get the opportunity to live their careers; farmers and ranchers do. Ranching is a unique job that is never boring. From battling Mother Nature, to battling a mother cow you have to be able to think on your feet! I find this to be very exciting, and excitement is only one of the reasons why I want to major in Farm and Ranch Management.
My dad is one of the smartest, hardest working men I know, and he’s a rancher. He has taught me how to depend on myself in order to get things done. Living on a ranch I have learned that things are always in need of repair. Since we can’t take everything to town to get it worked on
we have to learn and try new things in order to fix them. I am the only girl I know that has helped change the oil in a 4250 John Deere tractor.
When most people think about what a rancher is, they think about a cowboy. I want to change that. I want people to think of cowgirls too. I want to show them that girls can ride and work cattle. They can pull a calf and sort yearlings just like the boys. So by majoring in and educating myself in Farm and Ranch Management, I can better represent cowgirls in the future.
Sometimes my friends call and ask if I can go into town and hangout. I don’t get to do it very often, because there is always work to do. My friends feel sorry for me and tell me that they
are glad they don’t have to live on a ranch because I never get to have fun. I disagree with them because I have fun every day doing what I love the most.

I live on a ranch in Lynch, Nebraska and I love science. I want to go to school to be a science teacher or a Paleontologist. Living on a ranch makes it easy to study science every day.
My favorite thing to do is to find neat rocks and break them open and see all the pretty stuff on the inside. Rocks are a lot prettier on the inside then they are on the outside. I have a collection of the neatest rocks I find and I think my future students would enjoy looking at them. Most of my students will probably live in town and there are not as many rocks there so they will not know how awesome rocks are to study.
Living on a ranch I get to see a lot of animal science. I get to watch the barn swallows build their nest and understand how long it takes. I get to watch her care for her young. I get to see a brand new calf born. I get to see the momma cow clean and care for him. I have learned that she will do anything to keep him safe. Not many teachers get to watch a baby animal be born, but I get to because I live on a ranch. I will be able to talk to my students about animal science that I have experienced.
My class got to visit Ash Falls and it inspired me to be a Paleontologist. That man was just out exploring his parent’s ranch looking for fossils when he found a rhinoceros. I think it would be exciting to discover my own animal fossil. I already have a rock hammer and a microscope to help me discover and identify new things.
Living on a ranch will help me to be a better teacher or a better Paleontologist. I get to study science every day while having a good time. Science is all around me, there’s the science of how our crops grow and how our animals grow. There is also the science of geology and all of these sciences will help me in my future job.

Jake could have done one as well but we never could get his thoughts in order. He could list ideas but was struggling with creating complete sentences so we just let it go.
